It’s no secret that the pandemic began a shift in conversation on wellness and self care. It opened up a dialogue on how different populations deal with their mental health, and the many ways that we choose to treat and approach it.
Wellness and self-care don’t have to be expensive, and they don’t have to consume hours of your time. That sentiment is one of the driving forces behind Memphis native Olivia F. Scott’s company Freedom at the Mat.

Freedom at The Mat Prioritizes the Mental Health of Black Women Through Mindful Yoga Classes
Ebony Magazine
DATE: 21 May 2022
According to Psychiatric Times, women experience depression at rates twice that of men, but Black women are only half as likely to seek care as White women. Olivia F. Scott knows the consequences of Black women deprioritizing their mental and physical health all too well. Having come from a long line of Black women who didn’t have the resources to prioritize self-care, she witnessed three generations of women in her family die at exactly 65-years-old. To break this cycle, she founded Freedom at the Mat, a community destination for women to prioritize their well-being and obtain freedom from emotional scars.

If My Sister Had A Mat
Why making time & space to cultivate your mental & emotional wellness matters

When I created a self-care experience (Freedom At The Mat) for women, I briefly toyed with making the class unisex, but inspired by my sister and so many other women who doubt themselves and their worth, I’m resolute in my decision to dedicate a sacred space for them. Although Boots was curious about yoga and would tell me “I should try that,” she didn’t get the opportunity to in this lifetime. So, I dedicate my Freedom At The Mat women-only practice to Bootsie and all the women who are not free from society’s judgments, their pasts, and their own fears and shame and need a small place (a yoga mat) and time to be supported by other women in a non-judgemental way, while also getting a dose of physical and mental exercise.
