Finding Freedom on the Mat
Free • dom — the absence of necessity, coercion, or constraint in choice or action; liberation from the power of another.
Freedom has infinite definitions. It could be carefree happiness, freedom from emotional scars, or the liberty to make choices. Either way, finding freedom at the mat is an exhilarating journey. True freedom comes from within and requires personal growth and self-discovery, shedding negative thoughts and showing self-compassion.
Yoga presents physical and mental challenges, offering the opportunity for liberation and mental clarity, enabling us to find that freedom.
Yoga Techniques for Finding Freedom
- Embrace Vulnerability through Open-Hearted Postures Like Backbends
Backbends like Ustrasana (Camel Pose) open the heart to help release emotional blockages and embrace vulnerability. Practicing heart-openers allows one to confront past trauma courageously.
- Let Go of Expectations in the Practice of Inversions
Inversions, such as Sirsasana (Headstand), teach the beauty of letting go. One can discover freedom from self-imposed expectations by learning to fall and rise again. It inspires us to find joy in the process rather than perfection. Just be careful when you try inversions, and do use the wall when just starting.
- Cultivate Inner Strength and Resilience with Balancing Poses
Tree Pose (Vrksasana) is a symbol of resilience. Are you struggling with self-doubt? Balancing poses helps build inner strength and confidence, which can translate into greater self-assurance off the mat. They strengthen your legs too.
- Find Stillness and Acceptance in Restorative Yoga
Restorative yoga is a game-changer in dealing with stress. Poses like Supta Baddha Konasana (Reclined Bound Angle Pose) promote deep relaxation and acceptance, offering a sanctuary for mental peace.
- Nurture Self-Compassion through Gentle, Nourishing Sequences
Gentle sequences nurture self-compassion. These sessions help to develop a kinder relationship with oneself, embracing imperfections and celebrating small victories.
Each of these techniques can help you start your journey to finding freedom at the mat. Give them a try, and let us know what you think!
Freedom Affirmations
Affirmations can completely transform your yoga sessions into a meditative experience. They are grounding and guiding lights that keep us centered amidst the ebb and flow of thoughts. Repeating an affirmation throughout the day can shift your mindset and fill everyday moments with purpose and positivity.
Here are some freedom-filled affirmations that you can weave into your daily routine:
“The sun, she always shines.”
The sun is always shining. If it only shines for you when you’re with your loved one/s, then something isn’t right. We all have the responsibility to nurture our own happiness and keep the sun in our hearts shining. The more we fill our own cup, the more we liberate our mind, body, and soul.
‘But I miss them.’ Missing can be bittersweet, but they need their time just as much as you need yours. Use the feeling of missing someone as a reminder that you are alive. As long as you are living with purpose and appreciating the preciousness of your life, you’re shining radiantly.
“I love me.”
Please read that again. It is “I love me,” not “Do you love me?”
When we start feeling unlovable and insecure, we may seek affirmation from others to feel loved. This can lead us to rely on others for our worth. However, the truth is that we all possess love within ourselves. Instead of depending on others for happiness, it’s important to prioritize feeling the love within ourselves and sharing it with the world. Saying affirmations like ‘I love myself’ or ‘I love my life’ can be very healing.
“Don’t forget to play.”
The more we incorporate humor and playfulness into our lives, the better we can handle disagreements, triggers, and conflicts. When triggers pop up, we might find ourselves in tough spots feeling contracted, isolated, and reactive.
A dash of playfulness is one of the quickest ways to shift heavy, serious, stuck energies. We can bring in playfulness by not taking things too seriously, staying open and curious about what’s happening, and not getting too caught up in it.
“I am at home with myself.”
Relationships can make us feel like we’re floating in a love cloud (especially at the start), and it’s easy to get caught up in it. This affirmation is a nudge to be at home with ourselves, and reminds us that we’re enough as we are.
